What a year it has been and will be for the Simmons’ family.  With our only daughter, Bethany, married to Peter this past March, and our two oldest boys, Jake and Josh, engaged to be married this July and September…..all we can say is thank you, Lord Jesus.  Just more and more evidence of God’s incredible grace and kindness.  And as we remind each other as a family,  we never want to forget that this kindness came at a huge cost….’For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21. It will truly take an eternity to understand the kindness of God.

Then it happened, both of the boys ask me to be the best man in their weddings.  To say the least I was humbled and broken by the way God can take such wickedness, namely my sin, and turn it for His glory and our good.  July 18th and September 5th will be very emotional days for me.  I will be standing next to my sons, godly men, with a total awareness that this is not about Kay or me, Jake or Josh, Loren or Meggie, or family…this is a display of the gospel and God’s ability to shower us with his grace because of Christ’s death and resurrection.  Will I feel undeserving….yes.  But may I see the bigger picture, that he showers us with his grace and mercy so that future generations will know that he is God and worthy to be praised.  I love this passage in Ephesians, especially what I have highlighted.

Ephesians 2: 1-9

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Thank you Jake and Josh…it will be an honor to be your Best Man.  But may we all cast our gaze toward the God-man, Christ Jesus, for he alone is worthy to be praised.

I love this song….enjoy….Only Jesus
