Tuesday, Mark Altrogge posted an article on his blog, The Blazing Center, entitled Heath Ledger, Jim Elliot. Mark did a comparison of their lives which I found challenging.

  • Because of his acting abilities in high school, Heath Ledger was encouraged to pursue an acting career.
  • Because of his acting abilities in high school, Jim Elliot was encouraged to pursue an acting career.
  • Heath Ledger decided to pursue acting and went on to star in nearly 20 films.
  • Jim Elliot decided to pursue missionary work.
  • From a worldly perspective, Heath Ledger gained the world.
  • From a worldly perspective, Jim Elliot’s life was a waste and a loss.
  • Heath Ledger died at 28 from a accidental prescription drug overdose.
  • Jim Elliot died at 28 from the spears of the Huaorani Indians of whom his fellow missionaries and he were sharing the love of Christ.

Questions:

What would Heath Ledger say to us today?

What would Jim Elliot say to us today?

To the best of my knowledge, Heath Ledger died without Christ.

I believe that Jim Elliot would reiterate his quote that continues to be quoted to the day…“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

As Mark Altrogge did in his post, allow our Savior to give the proper perspective…

And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mk 8:34-36)
